Upgrade

Post by adampembs » Thu Jan 10, 2019 11:46 am

Just to let you know I've upgraded to the latest forum software. It was trickier than usual, requiring the old software to be replaced, instead of doing an in-place upgrade. Apologies for the short outage.

Hi Adam,

It looks like this upgrade has messed up a lot of the posts that have several images included again.

eg a few examples of what's typically gone wrong: -

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=223#p1099 (Text moved and images overlapping)

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=400#p2156 (Text moved at right hand side of post)

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=314 (Images overlapping and text below images half missing)

And some forums and topic pages are showing all blue, and with the main UK Fungi logo replaced by a PHP-BB logo.

viewforum.php?f=3

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=761&start=36

Regards,
Mike.

This is a strange one. I've posted a question in the phpbb community forums.

Hi Adam,

11:35am Friday 11th January.

You've obviously been doing more work on the site in the interim, so to update you on what I'm seeing: -

The multiple image & text problems mentioned in my post above now seem to be resolved, but the PHP-BB "header" is still showing on some pages - as below: -
Capture.JPG
Overall, quite a big change from how the forums have always looked.
I think it will take a while to get used to the new page style. and the way that individual posts look. :)

Regards,
Mike

I was trying to see if there was a problem with my template or whether it was the update. It seems it was both. The new theme is a 3rd party one. There is a bug that means the default style is not being applied to all the forums, and I have to manually go to each one and change it. I've been racking my brain but my priority was to get it working. If you are still seeing the blue "phpbb" theme anywhere, please let me know. You may need to refresh the page.

regards

Adam

Like the update and new header Adam - but (being biased toward lichens) am sad that yesterday's Cladonia background has gone today!

Sorry, Jenny. I just felt the background was a little too distracting. If you'd like a lichen as the header image, I'd be happy to use it. I would need a photo at least 1110 x 350 (letterbox shape)

I've tried lightening the background it a bit to see if it works better.

Hi Adam,

When logged in, there is no longer any indication on the main homepage to let people know that new (unread posts) have been made.

Only when you have actually navigated to a forum that does contain unread posts, do you see a small red marker, at the left hand side of the title of the unread post(s).

Is it possible to highlight forums that contain unread posts on the main homepage?

(And is it possible to increase the size of that red marker - it's rather small  ).

Regards,
Mike.

At the moment, I'm not planning to make any customisations to the current theme other than the header image (Hazel Gloves) or the background (Lichen) which are easy to do. I could go back to the original theme, but I need to update it to make to compatible with the latest version of the forum software (phpbb) - do people prefer the previous theme or this one? Would be good to know before I spend another 1/2 to full day of development.

I agree the unread posts colour coding was useful so its a shame to lose that.

Personally, being a bit of a dinosaur on such things, I do prefer the previous theme.
It was more discreet / less intrusive. This new theme has elements that, (to me), don't gel well. (e.g. The little toucan face icons and the red topics/posts counters). In general, I don't particularly like tiled background images in empty screen space around forum pages.

On that one, I would much prefer to see the forum itself occupying the full width of the screen, as it does on some other similar style websites such as http://wildaboutthebritishisles.uk/

Yes, I think that being able to see where new posts are immediately upon logging in, is important.

Hi Adam
I'm not a big fan of change, but that is very British.
Once you get used to it, I don't see any real issues.
You have the quick link to unread posts, which I always use anyway.
I personally admire the skill, time, and commitment that you put in.
Regards,
Chris
