I agree the unread posts colour coding was useful so its a shame to lose that.
Yes, I think that being able to see where new posts are immediately upon logging in, is important.
Just noticed that unread posts are actually shown (when logged in) by the margins of the "Toucan Icon" being changed to red colour.
The difference between that and the other Toucan Icons (which have green margins) is certainly not very pronounced though.
I probably wouldn't have noticed this were it not for reading the details beside the four Toucan Icons showing at very bottom of homepage

What do you think of this theme (only in this sub-forum) ? As a basis for development. I can then add our own customisations. Its full width and quite clean.

I quite like that! - It certainly fills the usable space nicely on my monitor, and looks (to my mind) less obtrusive and somehow "tidier" than the Toucan theme.
I can imagine it would allow for multiple image thumbnails to be horizontally located rather than vertically, making them easier to see (less scrolling).
Also, on the forum page, in this theme, unread posts show up a lot more clearly: -
I would think that with suitable UK Fungi specific customisation, it would look very good.
I use a desktop PC when viewing UK Fungi, so not sure whether this theme would cross over to small smartphone user's screens as nicely?
Obviously, to further site development, things need to go with what the majority deem best, so, happy to go with whatever the consensus ends up being, and with however you want to continue the site development.

having now recognized that the tucan frame changes to red when new posts are in a theme, I personally have no problems with the design any more. I think you changed the back colour to grey or made it somewhat more pleasant to look at (for my eyes ...) and now I would be quite happy with the tucan design. The style here in this post is okay too, but a bit ... erm ... boring and reminds me at the design of a lavatory - of course my personal opinion only
thank you very much, Adam!
