BLS Virtual Identification Meeting

Post by Neil Sanderson » Thu Aug 20, 2020 1:44 pm

An idea for the forum. The BLS has unfortunatly had to cancel further meetings, including the Winter Workshop in March at Cober Hill, which was to be an extended meeting on lichenicolous fungi.

So given the COVID situation looks like it is is not ending soon, the BLS are think of doing some virtual lichen meetings, by Zoom or such like. Is there any interest in the forum in a virtual lichen identification workshop?

All the best

If there was sufficient interest, we could have a series of virtual meetings to introduce the new LGBI3 family accounts, to explain the changes and focus on ID issues for the species included?

I would be interested, but I'm not sure that our broadband would be upto it!

I'd be interested too. This is a great opportunity to work out how we can interact remotely.

I can imagine some interesting live identification events, although I'd have to find a better solution to sharing what's down my microscope than holding my phone to the eyepiece

Seriously though, if anyone is willing to provide a refresher on sectioning and microscopy I would welcome it.

Great! But where to start?
Right now I'd like to revise all those nasty little Caloplacas (OK, beautiful, but I find them really hard to tell apart, especially when snailed or otherwise smudged.)
Tomorrow it will be Cladonias or Rinodinas, or, or, or.

Even "easy" things need looking at again occasionally. I recall the fun and confusions had with Ramalinas at Cober Hall this spring.

Whatever one's expertise there will always be questions and problems, so good luck pitching it at an inclusive level.

This is all great, so I will have to start working out how to do it, but Juliet, Caloplaca, ohh dear, I am probably worse than you, but a master class in where we are with this family would be great, if there is someone who has got a grip of it: Paul any thoughts. As you suggested we certainly need to do to outreach on the great renaming that LGBI3 is bringing. A lot of it is actually quite exciting, with assorts of converged evolution confounding morphological classifications but with the true relationships bringing enlightenment as to the incredible flexibility of lichen fungi.

Any more ideas, any one interested in Cladonia? I can sort of do that!

I'd vote for Cladonia too, provided my broadband can cope.
