Found growing on Holly at least some dead branches - I tentatively have thought Nectria but don't know which one. Cluster of grape structures 2-3mm across

Nectria and associated genera form a very difficult area, now more is known about them. Ideally you need:
  • to know whether the perithecia have been formed on a stroma (probably 'yes' in this case)
measurements / descriptions of asci and ascopores
a thin section through a perithecium
a description of an anamorphic state, if present (culturing might be necessary)
to be 100% sure sequencing is advised
There are of course some species which are fairly obvious providing you have some of that information. Unfortunately in this case, even knowing it was on Ilex is of little help. "Nectria sp." is a safe bet though . . .

Hi Chris

Thanks for your comments - I think I'll stick at Nectria sp.

Have a good New Year

Worth looking out for Mollisia subglobosa which grows with Nectria on Holly.
