Not even sure its fungal - I assumed I could find out easily (wrongly!) on Carex pendula in Cornwall - Anyone got any ideas.

it's the smut Farysia thuemenii - nice find; note how it's specifically attacking the utricles (ovaries) . . .
I see my mate Jerry Cooper has beaten you to this, but only the 2nd Cornish record on C. pendula:

and only one other record for Cornwall for this fungus (Perranporth 1952 on Carex riparia) as far as I can see.
