Is this a smut? I found it on a Rowan leaf yesterday morning.

Re: Smut on Rowan?
I'm by no means certain, (a photo of the other side of the leaf might have been useful), but from what I see, I suspect that this might have been caused by some sort of leaf mine insect.
Regards,
Mike.

Re: Smut on Rowan?
Hi
Mike is close, but no coconut this time
This is an "erineum" gall (in its early stages of formation) rather than a leafmine, and is caused by a mite rather than an insect: Phyllocoptes sorbeus. Mike is right in suggesting you would see a bit more by looking at the lower leaf surface.
compare with http://www.bioimages.org.uk/html/r152480.htm
Interesting that this was in Sussex (?) as it's generally thought of as a northern England/Scottish species; this map though:
https://data.nbn.org.uk/Taxa/NHMSYS0020190645 is totally 'underpopulated' - one sees galls of this on Rowan quite commonly all over this part of western Yorkshire. I presume the galls people have not yet got their records on to the NBN Gateway.
best wishes
Chris

Re: Smut on Rowan?
Thanks Chris and Mike! It was found in Sussex. I'll add a record on iRecord (that goes to NBN, right?), but is there a county recorder for galls I should contact?

Reason: I think you meant Chris, not Adam... I know nothing about smut (at least not in the biological sense :-)

Whereabouts are you Jimmy ?? I am sure your Local Biodiversity Records Centre would be very pleased to receive your record(s).
